Ultrafast Laser Micro-Machining of Metals

  • During Ultrafast Laser Micro-Machining, extremely short pulses of laser light (from femtosecond to picosecond) are used to remove material in a controlled manner at the micron-scale. Compared to other machining techniques, ultrafast laser micromachining allows for cleaner features to be obtained. Furthermore, the laser pulses are so intense that they directly vaporize the material which results in almost no heat affected zone. This project will focus on drilling laser holes and trenches, characterizing the micro-machined features by optical and electron microscopy, and optimizing the machining process (number of pulses, energy per pulse, pulse length, machining environment).
